Chase race start times adjusted

Chase race start times adjusted

NASCAR will move the start times of its Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup events on Sunday afternoons to avoid a starting time that conflicts with kickoffs of NFL games.
Officials with International Speedway Corp. announced the change during their call Thursday with financial analysts in discussing their fourth-quarter results. NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston later confirmed the changes.
The races at Chicagoland, New Hampshire, Dover, Kansas, Talladega and Martinsville will start at 2 p.m. Eastern, while Texas, Phoenix and Homestead-Miami will start at 3 p.m. Eastern. The other Chase race, at Charlotte , is a Saturday night event.
In 2010, all of the Chase races on Sundays except Texas , Phoenix and California started at 1 p.m.—the same time that the NFL kicked off its early games.
ESPN, which was in its first year of televising the nine Sunday races of the Chase after they were televised on ABC in previous years, will keep those events. Viewership for eight of the nine races that were moved was down at least 15 percent and overall ratings were down by more than 20 percent for seven races.

Atlanta Motor Speedway President Ed Clark Comments on NASCAR’s 2011 Changes

Atlanta Motor Speedway President Ed Clark Comments on NASCAR’s 2011 Changes

HAMPTON, Ga. (Jan. 26, 2011) – As part of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Media Tour hosted by Charlotte Motor Speedway, NASCAR announced competition changes for the 2011 racing season.
Atlanta Motor Speedway president and general manager Ed Clark commented on the modifications outlined by series officials: “NASCAR is to be saluted for their off-season work on the significant program changes announced today. The new elements will keep the sport fresh and interesting for both long-time fans and new followers of the sport. The changes to NASCAR Sprint Cup qualifying will bring a great amount of drama back to pole qualifying day. We will see new heroes emerge in the Nationwide Series as drivers now have to choose what series they want to run for a title in. And, with the point system changes, there will be a heightened level of competition in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. 2011 will be a very interesting season.”
Atlanta Motor Speedway will play host to all three of NASCAR’s top touring divisions on Labor Day weekend in 2011 with night racing under the lights:
Friday, Sept. 2nd: NASCAR Camping World Truck Series
Saturday, Sept. 3rd: NASCAR Nationwide Series
Sunday, Sept. 4th: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series

TEXAS SPEEDWAY PRESIDENT GOSSAGE ON 2011 CHANGES

FORT WORTH, Texas (January 26, 2011) – The following is a statement from Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage regarding the announcement today from NASCAR on its restructuring of the points system for all three national series (Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series). NASCAR is incorporating a “one point per position” scoring system, ranging from 43 points for first to one point for the 43rd and final position. There also will be bonus points awarded for a win (3), most laps led (1) and leading a lap (1). Texas Motor Speedway plays host annually to two races in each of the respective series.

“These guys are going to be driving like their hair is on fire. Give NASCAR credit for placing the emphasis on winning races with the new points system. With the new points system, drivers are encouraged to win races in order to be in a position to win the championship. The points championship should be secondary to winning races week in and week out. If you do that, championships take care of themselves.”

Charlotte Motor Speedway Gives World's Largest HDTV

Charlotte Motor Speedway Gives World's Largest HDTV Construction Update

NASCAR Sprint Media Tour participants visited the future site of the world's largest high-definition video board on the backstretch of Charlotte Motor Speedway's 1.5-mile tri-oval Tuesday afternoon.
When completed, the structure will tower 110 feet above the track
and measure 200 feet wide by 80 feet tall. The steel frame alone, which will be supported on 12 concrete piers anchored 50 feet into the ground, will weigh 500,000 pounds. Adding the 165,000-pound 720p high-definition screen means the whole project will weigh as much as a fueled Boeing 747 aircraft.
Earth-moving equipment has been working since mid-January and will  ultimately relocate 18,900 cubic yards of dirt and 3,000 cubic yards of concrete.
The screen will replace bleachers that were first used during the speedway's inaugural 600-mile race in 1960.
Charlotte Motor Speedway President and General Manager Marcus Smith spoke about the addition of Panasonic's 16,000-square-foot "flat screen to end all flat screens."
"With more than nine million LED lamps, this video board will give people the benefit of being at the race - having the whole race experience -
and getting to see replays and important events up close," Smith said. "I can't wait to see it. Every time I look out of my office window, I wonder, is it here yet?"
NASCAR television commentators Jeff Hammond and Mike Joy helped Smith with the presentation.
Hammond said, "Bruton, Marcus, and the speedway are always raising the bar. '
Once again, here it is. My question is, will guys going down the back straight try to look up to see how good they are doing?"
Joy said, "This is a fantastic project. A lot of ballparks put in big screens so fans don't miss replays of important events.
This is a groundbreaking project. No fan is ever going to miss the action because it will be right here."
Members of the speedway's Fan Council, whose ideas and suggestions drove the project to reality, were in attendance. Daniel Sain, of Maiden,N.C., and Helen Bailey, from Cornelius, N.C., were on hand to inspect the screen's progress.
"I've been coming to the races here for 15 years," Sain said. "I watched my first race from the infield, where the view isn't so good.
This screen will give those folks an experience they've never had."
"This is the biggest Fans First initiative we have ever undertaken,"said Scott Cooper, vice president of communications for Charlotte Motor Speedway.
"The Fan Council is a key part of everything we do here. We will work with them throughout the year to find out what we can do to benefit our fans even more."

NASCAR wants lane stripes at Daytona

NASCAR wants lane stripes at Daytona: NASCAR will ask Daytona International Speedway to add broken, white lane stripes between Turns 1 and 2 and Turns 3 and 4 before returning in February. Sprint Cup director John Darby said before NASCAR returns for Speed Weeks, the track will add lane markers in all the 31-degree banked areas. "We've had some conversations with a few drivers and they've told us that would be helpful to them when they are three wide in a draft," Darby said Saturday. "The hash marks will give them some sort of a guide to understand how much room they have above and below them. In talking with the Speedway (Saturday) morning, they said they will probably paint those right before the stock cars start running in February." Darby said the double-yellow lines, which separate the racing surface from the out-of-bounds area for NASCAR races at Daytona, will not be moved from the apron to the track surface.Daytona Beach News Journal

O'Reilly Raceway Park now known as Lucas Oil Raceway: Lucas Oil Products has expanded its visibility at Indianapolis-area sports sites, adding naming rights to a motor sports facility to go with a football stadium. Forrest Lucas' company acquired rights to O'Reilly Raceway Park in Clermont. It's now known as Lucas Oil Raceway. Lucas secured the rights to Lucas Oil Stadium, home to the Indianapolis Colts, in 2008. The oval track on the property has NASCAR Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series races in July and an assortment of U.S. Auto Club and ARCA races. Terms of Lucas' multiyear contract with NHRA, which owns the facility, were not revealed. In the stadium deal, Lucas agreed to pay $120 million over 20 years. Lucas, a former truck driver, founded the company, which produces premium lines of oils, greases and automotive additives, in 1989. It is based in Corona, Calif., with a bottling facility in Corydon, Ind.
